About Jessica Walker
I was very excited when asked to write the Safer in the City column for SaferDates.com. I knew that my background in martial arts would help further assist the Safer Dates team with becoming a reliable resource that empowers the online community to defend against becoming a victim of any type of crime.
The Safer in the City column is a great platform for offering our subscribers and members tons of information on safety and dating through articles, reviews, opinions and Blog Talk Radio interviews with experts. Plus I step it up a notch and offer videos on self-defense tips and adventurous dating destinations.
My background in safety and self-defense started when I was very young. While other girls were making macaroni necklaces in Girl Scouts, I was sparring with boys, breaking boards and doing knuckle push-ups on the cement in Tae Kwon Do class.
I was enrolled in martial arts at age five. After a couple years, I was asked to assist the school with their self-defense demonstrations. By age eight I became the youngest student to earn a black belt. A year later I earned my first-degree black belt. My Stepfather was one of my instructors and for some time he owned a Tae Kwon Do school of his own. When his school burnt down he became a police officer. So, you could say my household growing up was a “safety haven” given it housed three black belts (my sister is the third), a cop and an arsenal of weapons (guns, knives, stun guns etc…)
Martial arts taught me how to use my own body as a weapon including whatever object was within reach. You’d be surprised at the stuff lying around you right now that can be turned into a weapon at a moment’s notice. Check out our safety videos and you’ll see what I mean. Plus subscribe to our site and stay up-to-date on the latest safety and relationship topics.
Here’s to keeping you Safer in the City!
